Over 60 years ago, my grandfather Jerry G. Rodgers served as the Scoutmaster for Troop 60 in the Tri-cities, WA. During that time he helped just over 50 young men achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. This award is the highest rank a Boy Scout can achieve. His troop participated in many national jamborees and was ranked 25th overall within the LDS sponsored troops. His dedication and example encouraged young men to make positive life choices. Many of these men have become very influential in their communities, careers, and church callings.
I was born seven months after my Grandfather passed away. Although I never had the chance to meet him I heard many wonderful stories about him from the actual boys (past Eagle Scouts) he mentored so many years ago. Many of them attribute the success they have had to their foundation in Scouting. As an Eagle Scout myself I began to realize how influential my own leaders were in helping me make correct life decisions. I believe that positive role models can inspire youth to achieve great things.
While reminiscing with my Grandma, I realized that I needed to get in contact with as many of my Grandfather’s Eagle Scouts as I could. With my professional training in photography, I naturally wanted to photograph these men. I quickly realized that this project had the potential to affect a very large audience because the Boy Scout program is such a recognizable organization. By telling the story of my Grandpa and his Eagle Scouts, I hope that those who see the photographs will be reminded of those who have influenced them and feel inspired to be a positive role model to those around them.
